JUAN GONZALES

Juan grew up spoiled – he always had everything he wanted. But, when his father became a busy pastor, Juan felt a shift in the amount of time his father could spend with him. He began to seek connections with friends who spent time in the streets. At age 17, Juan’s friend was a victim of racialized violence. He and his friends responded, an altercation ensued, and someone was shot. As a result, ten people were arrested. Four of them, including Juan, were just 17. Despite not having a gun during the fight, Juan was convicted of murder and sentenced to serve life without the possibility of parole, Juan served 29 years in prison before his release became possible. Now a Maintenance Supervisor and a homeowner, Juan is thrilled about the chapter he is currently writing.
