YSRP, Parent Advocate Kameelah, Justice Lab, DHS, and Councilman Johnson speak on Panel at Temple Law called “Advocacy in Action”

On April 17, 2017, Justice Lab students Sela Cowger, Kelsey Grimes, and Wesley Stevenson, along with YSRP Co-founder Lauren Fine, Commissioner of the Department of Human Services Cynthia Figueroa, and Councilman Kenyatta Johnson joined Professor Colleen Shanahan in a conversation about YSRP & the Justice Lab’s successful advocacy and the City of Philadelphia’s decision to stop collecting incarceration costs from the families of children in detention. Collectively the panel shared about the work, the victory, what it means for the city – and what comes next. At the conclusion of the panel, YSRP Partner and Parent Advocate Kameelah Davis Spears received an award and addressed the crowd to share how this policy change — which was initiated because of her — has impacted her and her family’s life.
